Our Revolution Michigan Announces Candidate Endorsements

July 19, 2017

Ann Arbor – Our Revolution Michigan, a statewide organization that’s part of the national Our Revolution organization that grew out of the Bernie Sanders campaign, announced its first candidate endorsements today. The candidates, running for office in Lansing, Westland, metro Detroit, and Grand Rapids, will appear on the August 8th, 2017 ballot.

“The strong surge of interest in running for office among progressives is deeply encouraging. Our Revolution Michigan is honored to support these great candidates for office,” states Tammie Lewis, member of the Our Revolution Michigan Endorsement Committee, and a 2nd grade teacher and union leader from Gladwin, Michigan.

Wesley Wilson, President of the Michigan Federation of College Democrats, and also a member of the Our Revolution Michigan Endorsement Committee states, “Endorsements from Our Revolution Michigan are very important because often in districts that always go blue, you get people who run as democrats who sometimes aren’t even progressive, and in some cases are even conservatives running as Democrats to win. Our endorsements are crucial because they help ensure we get strong progressives elected.”

The five candidates receiving endorsements are Sandra Bucciero, Joe Schaefer, Kathie Dunbar, Tina Houghton, and Christine Mullan.

Sandra Bucciero is a Democratic candidate for House District 1, which encompasses Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores, and part of Northeast Detroit. Bucciero is an attorney with an impressive record of community involvement working for justice issues, including as Chair of the Voting Rights Task Force of Grosse Pointe’s We GP.  She has a criminal defense practice, representing indigent defendants. This special election has a crowded field; it is being held as a result of the resignation of incumbent Brian Banks (D-Harper Woods).

Joe Schaefer, a lifelong Westland resident, is running for Westland City Council. Schaefer brings a background in business and a strong history as a community advocate for working families to his candidacy. Schaefer has already received endorsements from the Michigan Federation of College Democrats and the UAW Region 1-A.

Tina Houghton is a Program Advisor at MSU and an incumbent Lansing City Councilwoman seeking re-election. A former City Council President, she recently introduced a resolution to have the city continue to uphold the Paris Climate Agreement and is working on a medical marijuana ordinance.

Kathie Dunbar, a current member of the Lansing City Council running for re-election, is the Director of the South Lansing Community Development Association. Dunbar is the recipient of many awards recognizing her commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and community development, including Michigan State University’s Caesar E. Chavez Community service Award, and a Community Leadership Award from the Neighborhood Associations of Michigan.

Christine Mullan, running for 1st Ward City Commissioner in Grand Rapids, is a social worker and community organizer. Mullan also is a member of several progressive groups’ core teams, including Michigan United, Forward Action Michigan-Grand Rapids, and Grand Rapids Immigrant Solidarity Network’s Rapid Response Team.

Our Revolution Michigan was founded by former Bernie Sanders staffers and grassroots organizers, and has thousands of members and more than a dozen local groups statewide. The group’s goal is to create a more progressive Michigan by:

  • supporting progressive candidates at all levels of office;

  • working for progressive issues including a reduced dependence on fossil fuels, single-payer health care for all, and a $15 minimum wage;

  • transforming the Michigan Democratic Party;

  • supporting and encouraging elected officials to commit to progressive positions.

These endorsements are by the statewide group rather than the national Our Revolution organization; Our Revolution Michigan will, however, be nominating candidates for endorsement by the national organization. www.ourrevolutionmichigan.com
